On Tuesday January 17th, volunteers from the staff and the athletic department at Princeton Day School organized and hosted the Skate with the Trenton Titans event for the Mercer Bulldogs and their families. The night started with games and a pizza party sponsored by Naked Pizza of Princeton. Players from the Trenton Titans were on hand to talk with the families and sign autographs.
After the food and games, it was time to hit the ice. Everyone was welcome put some skates on and join in the fun. It was fantastic seeing all of the Bulldogs out there with their brothers, sisters, parents and the Trenton Titans. What a special night… Everyone was smiling the whole time and this turned out to be one of the best Mercer Bulldogs events so far!
But the evening wasn’t just special for the Mercer Bulldogs and their families, it was a great experience for the Trenton Titans as well. We caught up with Head Coach Vince Williams after the event and here is what he had to say… “Being able to skate with the Mercer County Bulldogs was a fantastic opportunity for our players [Trenton Titans] to engage in the community and share our common love of hockey. It was great to see the guys playing with the kids, helping them skate, joking around and what not. As a player, there are few feelings that compare to knowing you make a positive impact in someone’s day by just being yourself.”
“We wanted to concentrate the evening around the kids, they were our focus, but I think my guys got the most from the evening. When you are a professional athlete, it is easy to take certain things for granted. You get ice time every day. From practice to games, video sessions and team meetings; you live and breathe the sport. It was renewing to see the Bulldogs’ excitement and energy of just being out on the ice. Seeing the kids’ smiles and all the fun they were having was a great reminder of how fortunate we are to play hockey. Physical and mental handicaps are no match for these little athletes. My guys felt very privileged and inspired to have had this experience. We look forward to continuing our relationship further with the Bulldogs!”
The entire Mercer Bulldog Special Hockey family would like to express our deepest gratitude to the Trenton Titans. Scott Bertoli and Titans GM Rich Lisk did a spectacular job in putting the event together. Titans Staff - Megan Cook and Sarah McQuarrie helped get things organized and did a great job interacting with the kids.
Also on hand were several photographers to capture all of the action on and off the ice. Our team photographer Sue Szeker took lots of great shots which can be found on our Facebook page. In addition, Vic Kuzmic and Dennis McLaughlin took some fantastic photos from right on the ice in the middle of the action. Once we sort through them all, we will do our best to make them available.
Special thanks to everyone at Princeton Day School, such as Harry Rulon - Miller (PDS Rink Coordinator) and Bill Doyle (Rink Maintenance Staff) for keeping the rink open and reserving the ice. PDS staff volunteers Kat Smithson and Carolyn Cooper. PDS student volunteers Meg Ofner, Daisy Mase, Colby Triolo, Morgan Foster, Tom Hagan, Robin Linzmayer and Connor Walker. And of course a great big THANK YOU to the person who pulled it all together and one of the newest members of the Bulldogs Coaching Staff, Marie-Claire Heller.
